March 13th, 2007 · 1 Comment

During the wee morning hours of March 13, 2007, Sin City was about to close another chapter of old-style Las Vegas. The legendary Stardust Resort and Hotel said its final good night. At 2:00 am the implosion event kicked off with a spectacular five minute fireworks display leading into a ten second countdown. As the crowd cheered, the resort quickly went down in a cloud of dust.

The Stardust Hotel and Casino was built in 1958 and was once known as the largest resort with 1000+ rooms. It was one of the first high rise hotels to go up in Las Vegas. After 48 years, the Stardust was still enjoyed by it’s loyal customers. Many saying that it was the best old school hotel around.

Once the dust settles, a new development is already in the works. Construction due to start in 2007 is a $4 billion project, the Echelon Resort will cover 63 acres. Echelon Resort is expected to have 25 restaurants and bars and four hotels with as many as 5,300 rooms. Echelon Resort will have 2,600 room in its Resort Tower and 700 suites in the Suites Tower. The 3 other boutique hotels will be the Hong Kong based Shangri-LA Hotel, the South Beach Miami success, Delano Hotel and Manhattan famed Mondrian Hotel. Echelon Resort is due to open in 2010.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is planning on expanding in a big way.  Recently announced plans call for nearly $1 billion to be put into the property.  A new tower with 950 rooms will be added, the casino will double in size, and new restaurants and convention space will be added.   The pool area will be expanded as well.  The new tower will be 1 15-floor all suite hotel. The construction is supposed to be done by mid-2009.

Hard Rock announced a fairly similar plan a while ago, but then suddenly halted the plans about a year ago. Hopefully this time it will stick.

Stardust Implosion Set for March 13, 2:30 AM

March 2nd, 2007 · 5 Comments

There are unconfirmed reports that the implosion of the legendary Stardust Hotel is set for March 13th at 2:30am. The closest I have come to an official word this is a person claiming to work for the demolition company leaving a comment on an LA Times story about Stardust implosion that says:

I work for the company doing the implosion – it is March 13th @ 2:30 am. We are having a large event for this the 11 – 13th.

Boyd Gaming, who owns the land, has sworn the media to secrecy in an attempt to keep the crowds small during the implosion. The Stardust is being torn down to make way for the new $4 billion Echelon Place project.

Michael Jackson to Perform in Las Vegas?

February 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Apparently Michael Jackson is contemplating doing a show at a Las Vegas Casino. According to his spokesperson,

Mr. Jackson has been presented numerous proposals — proposals which he has not solicited, but were presented to him, several of which include performing in Las Vegas. Mr. Jackson is currently reviewing and evaluating each proposal. He does not believe that he is under any time constraint for making his decisions.”

The “King of Pop” moved to Las Vegas several months ago, so it does make sense that he may do a show there. Could he be bigger than Celine?

Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon: New Casino in the Center of the Las Vegas Strip

February 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Things are changing at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. In a few days, the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino will be shutting down for good. In it’s place will be the new Harrah’s owned property, Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon. No major renovations are taking place, it will mostly be just the signage that is being changed.

Much of the property will remain the same, which is good news for fans of the popular Big Elvis, who used to perform at Barbary Coast. He will be staying at the same place and same time for the foreseeable future, performing in the lounge Monday – Thursday from 3:00PM to 6:00PM. Rumor has it that he has signed a one year contract with Harrah’s.

The Victorian Room, the 24-hour diner/Chinese restaurant is staying put. Another aspect of the property that will remain is Drai’s, an after-hours dance club that is popular with Las Vegas natives. Gone, however will be Michael’s, the upscale restaurant that used to share a space with Drai’s. It is being replaced with Bill’s Steakhouse.

It’s hard to say how long Bill’s will last. Harrah’s now owns a large chunk of real estate in this mid-strip location, including Harrah’s the Flamingo, Ceasars Palace, Bally’s and Paris. Chances are that they will be doing some major reconstruction in the area, and Bill’s would be a prime suspect for being torn down and replaced with something newer, like an extension the the Flamingo. There have be no official plans released yet.

World Series of Golf in Las Vegas

February 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

You love to golf, right? And of course you love to gamble. Well here is a perfect tournament for you – The World Series of Golf. It’s a Las Vegas based, 3-day amateur event that combines golf and betting taking place on May 13-17 2007. The tournament is being held at the Primm Valley Golf course. It’s being billed as “The Texas Hold ‘Em of Golf”. They are accepting 180 entrants at a $10,000 dollar buy-in. The prizes are pretty good too, $250,000 for first place, down to $10,000 for 7th through 36th place for a total of $750,000 in prize money.

Here’s how it works. Players ante before they tee off of each hole. The ante starts at $100 and doubles every 3 holes. Players play only with group of five or six players that are playing together. With each shot, players get to pass, bet or fold. Once a golfer is out of money, they are out of the tournament. The last golfer in the group advances to the next round.

This sure seems like an interesting mix of betting strategy and golf skills. But, I don’t think anyone will be able to bluff in this game. Terry Leiweke, the president and chief executive officer of the World Series of Golf Incorporated, said “every golfer has thought, either alone or to himself, ‘I’d bet anything I can make this shot.’ Well, now is their chance to prove it.”

Here is a summary of the rules of play:

  • The World Series of Golf, the Texas Hold ‘Em of golf, is a hit-and-bet, ameteur-only event, designed for medium to high handicap players.
  • Players compete only against the players in their own pairings group
  • Pairing will be based on skill level; players will be paired with others of similar skill level
  • There will be no strokes given based on handicaps.
  • Players can bet, raise, check or fold with no limit after each round of shots and may go all in even if they cannot match the bet.
  • Players are eliminated when they do not have enough money in their purse to ante on the next hole.
  • Players who advance to Round II are guaranteed at least $10,000 in cash.
  • Each player is allowed to bring one financial advisor/caddy on the course.
  • Participants must be at least 21 years of age and never have held a professional status in golf at any time.

The final will be aired on NBC June 23 and 24. With the popularity of poker on television, and the regular viewers that golf gets, this could be a well watched tournament.

You can sign up at the official World Series of Golf website.
